LAWRENCE J. KORB is a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress. Prior to joining the Center, he was Vice-President and Director of Studies, and holder of the Maurice R. Greenberg Chair at the Council on Foreign Relations. Dr. Korb has also served as Director of the Center for Public Policy Education and Senior Fellow in Foreign Policy Studies at Brookings Institution, Dean of the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh, Vice-President of Corporate Operations at Raytheon Company, and Director of Defense Policy Studies at the American Enterprise Institute.
Dr. Korb served as Assistant Secretary of Defense (Manpower, Reserve Affairs, Installations and Logistics) from 1981 through 1985. In that position, he administered about 70% of the Defense budget and was a member of the Defense Acquisition Process. He was awarded DOD=s medal for Distinguished Public Service. He has also served as a consultant to the General Accounting Office and the National Security Council, as well as being a member of President Reagan's, President Bush's, and President Obama's Defense Advisory Groups during their Presidential campaigns.
Dr. Korb served four years on active duty as a Naval Flight Officer and retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve after 25 years with the rank of Captain. Dr. Korb has held several academic positions, including Professor of Management at the U.S. Naval War College, Associate Professor of Government at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Dayton, and Adjunct Professor in National Security Studies at Georgetown University.
He is the author of several books and publications on national security issues including: The Joint Chiefs of Staff: The First 25 Years; The Fall and Rise of the Pentagon; American National Security: Policy and Process; Reshaping America's Military; A New National Security Strategy in an Age of Terrorists, Tyrants, and Weapons of Mass Destruction; Military Reform; Building a Military for the 21st Century; Serving American Veterans; and A Unified National Security Budget. Dr. Korb has made over 3,000 appearances as a commentator on virtually every major network news program and testified more than 100 times before Congress. His over 200 op-ed pieces have appeared in The Washington Post, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Boston Globe, Philadelphia Inquirer, Christian Science Monitor, Chicago Tribune, and the International Herald Tribune.
