FOREIGN POLICY SEMINAR

RUSSIA - A Political-Economic Conflict Seminar

June 12-14, 2007

The past two decades have brought enormous changes to Russia and the other former Soviet republics of Eastern Europe and Central Asia--changes that will have a direct impact on U.S. foreign policy for years to come. With that in mind, this special Political-Economic Conflict Seminar will address current developments in Russia and their likely long-term implications for U.S. national security.

In the six years since coming to power, Russian President Vladimir Putin has turned parliament, the media and a small circle of associates ? many of them former KGB colleagues ? into a political machine for running the country and its profitable energy industries. The friendship between President George Bush and Putin can no longer hide the obvious strains in U.S. - Russian relations, made worse lately by Moscow's support of hard-line regimes in Iran and Syria and the Hamas-controlled Palestinian Authority.

Putin has said that after his presidency ends in 2008, he will stay close enough to his successor to guarantee the continuation of his political agenda. That would seem to suggest that he not only intends to hand pick the person who takes his place, but also exercise unprecedented influence on the next Kremlin administration.

How will the coming months of intrigue affect Moscow's already shaky relations with Washington? When will Putin's penchant for hardball oil politics show itself next? Will grassroots democracy finally emerge in Russia as it has in Georgia and Ukraine? And, if it does, how will Kremlin leadership respond?

These and other topics will be the focus of a three-day seminar that will bring together more than a dozen experts in the field for a uniquely informative look at unfolding events in Russia.
