NORTH KOREA: NUCLEAR BLACKMAIL AND INTERNATIONAL DIPLOMACY
A Political-Economic Conflict Seminar
June 11, 2003
Since the end of the Korean War 50 years ago, few Americans have given much thought to the nation of North Korea. With the collapse of Communism, many may have even assumed the country had gone the way of the other countries of the old Soviet bloc.
However, despite the country's abject poverty, North Korea has become menacing again - aggressively developing nuclear weapons in flagrant violation of international agreements while simultaneously threatening the use of these and other weapons of mass destruction against the United States and its allies.
This workshop will examine the difficult choices facing U.S. policymakers in light of the new threat posed by North Korea. The workshop will also provide an in-depth analysis of the country's geopolitical infrastructure and the diplomatic options available to the United States, regional Asian powers, and the world community.
