INDIA & SOUTH ASIA: WAKING GIANTS AND SLEEPING ISSUES
A Political-Economic Conflict Seminar
June 3-5, 2008
By virtue of its size, population and growing economy, India is not only a major regional power in Asia, it is becoming more influential on the global stage. In several years democratic India will surpass China as the most populous country in the world, with a considerably better gender and age balance.
During the past decade India's GDP has more than doubled to $3.3 trillion, making it the world's fourth largest economy. There's little doubt that within a generation India will be one of a handful of dominant economic powers.
On the diplomatic front India is strengthening ties with its traditional ally Russia as well as its old enemy China; at the same time it continues to build a strong political and economic partnership with the United States. In addition to modernizing its military, India is expanding its domestic defense industry and upgrading its nuclear force and delivery systems.
How will India's new status affect the balance of power in Asia? And how will U.S.-India relations change in the process? This seminar will address the promise and peril of India's growing role in Asia and the world. Among the topics considered will be:
