FOREIGN POLICY SEMINAR

EUROPE - A Political-Economic Conflict Seminar

June 27-29, 2006

Five hundred years ago, Europe began to emerge as the dynamic center of world politics. Driven by intellectual ferment, global exploration, scientific and technological advances-not to mention economic and political revolutions-the European states struggled amongst themselves for mastery of the continent and global pre-eminence. The United States can be seen as an extension of European civilization and the 20th Century Cold War as a rivalry between two peripheral but Eurocentric powers.

The collapse of the Soviet Union, the rise of Asia, and the stirring of a politicized Islam signal for some the definitive shift of the political center of gravity away from Europe. Yet to a substantial degree, European economic power, social values, and political experimentation continue to dominate much of global politics. Though somewhat frayed, America's ties with Europe remain the central element of U.S. multilateral diplomacy. The evolution of power from the Atlantic to the Urals thus remains crucial for global stability and economic integration.

This workshop is intended to examine the continuing struggles within Europe to define the character of European power and its relationship to the rest of the world.
