LEGISLATIVE POLITICS IN A TIME OF
AUSTERITY AND DEFICITS

During the past few years, the White House and Congress pursued the most ambitious social and economic agenda in recent American history. From health care and energy to education and the environment, together they charted a course that dramatically increased the size and cost of government. Now in the current Congress, with Republicans firmly in control of the House of Representatives, these changes are in jeopardy. As the deficit and national debt reach record levels, the emphasis is on cutting spending in all areas, including defense.

As the economy demands serious attention, rapidly changing global events continue to affect all aspects of U.S. policy making. The elimination of Osama bin Laden may have ended one phase of America's long war on terror; however, a new more complicated struggle, highlighted by the so-called "Arab Spring," illustrates the difficulties facing elected officials at both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue. In addition to America's ongoing involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan, other areas of the world — Latin America, Sub-Sahara Africa, South Asia, and China and East Asia — will make significant demands on lawmakers.

How will Congress respond to and finance this assortment of challenges? What will the budgetary impact be on federal agencies? The Capitol Hill Workshop offers attendees the unique opportunity to discuss current issues of interest, in an off-the-record setting, with a group of speakers of national stature who have personal experience in critical aspects of the national policymaking process.

The following topics are from 2011 Capitol Hill Workshops and are meant to offer interested participants an illustration of the type of sessions they will be experiencing in this seminar. Approximately ten presentations will be made during the workshop. Presentations and subject matter may change to address events and topics of interest at the time of the seminar.

PROGRAM SCHEDULE

The Capitol Hill Workshop will be held at the Clarion Hotel, which is located at 980 Hospitality Way, in Aberdeen, Maryland. Continental breakfast and registration will start at 7:30am on Wednesday, April 25. The seminar will begin at 8:00am and conclude at approximately 4:00pm each day. A luncheon workshop with speaker is included each day.

SEMINAR FORMAT

It is anticipated that there will be a minimum of ten high-level presentations given by a group of prestigious individuals who have first-hand knowledge of the formulation and development of U.S. public policy. No video, power point or audio-visual aids are utilized in the presentations. These programs are informal and strictly "off-the-record."

PROGRAM MODERATOR

A qualified moderator will facilitate dialogue between the speakers and participants over the course of the two-day seminar. An on-site coordinator will be provided to attend to workshop logistics.

FEE

$1,245 per person.

Workshop registrations will be accepted by phone and online at our website using the Register Today link. Registrations are to be followed by the appropriate training documentation, purchase order, or credit card information.

MISCELLANEOUS

Upon receipt of registration, attendees will receive confirmation via email. Cancellations will be accepted in writing or by facsimile no later than Wednesday, April 11. After that time, substitutions will be accepted. The Agency will be billed if registration is cancelled after the deadline.

Reporting information will be sent to all participants by Friday, April 6.
