CAPITOL HILL WORKSHOP:
THE PRESIDENTIAL TRANSITION, THE GLOBAL ECONOMY, AND U.S. NATIONAL INTERESTS
Holiday Inn – Fairborn, Ohio June 16-17, 2009

The Capitol Hill Workshop: The 2008 Transition, The Global Economy and U.S. National Interests will address a broad range of policy issues facing the 111th Congress and the new Administration. Not since The Great Depression have Americans witnessed the economic turbulence confronting America and the world today - a set of circumstances that will have a lasting impact for people in all walks of life, whether civilian or military. No corner of our democracy will escape the aftermath of the financial tsunami that has shaken our institutions, worried our families, and affected U.S. foreign and domestic policies. The impact will be felt by the Department of the Air Force and every other segment of the federal family, involving budgeting and strategic planning. The global economic downturn is already impacting civilian as well as government retirements.

President Obama’s pledge to enlarge U.S. forces in Afghanistan is already taking shape and is operative, as the new government of Iraq attempts to establish a Democracy. Stepped-up U.S. bombings along the Pakistan/Afghanistan border have been ordered by the President and are expected to increase - meaning a greater presence abroad for U.S. forces. Reigning in Iran’s nuclear development is becoming as priority issue, as are relations with a less friendly Russia. Recent trips by U.S. officials to China, Japan, Indonesia and Korea were designed to improve strained relations. How will the President and Congress deal with the strenuous demands and fewer dollars for defense? What are the implications for the Department of the Air Force? No item in the DOD budget will escape the budget cutter’s eye or his knife - cherished weapons included. The situation for the military is both institutional and personal.

These issues, along with other matters affecting the nation, will be discussed by a distinguished group of leading authorities on the national policy-making process.
